After an absence of several weeks I returned to the shelter today. I´ve missed my cats and dogs so much with graduations, whirlwind trips to Spain and parties, I haven´t had much of a chance to go lately. Rosie the gentle giant Newfoundland-something mix has been taken to a foster home. No one wanted to adopt her. Poor girl...at least now she can leave the shelter for a good long while. She´s so huge that she needs a very large home. I spent a long time in the cattery. I was greeted by Sylvester who seemed to remember me. He´s been there so long. How can people not want such a loving, shiny black cat with bright green eyes? He acts more like a dog and follows you around. I had to hold him just about the whole time, much to the frustration of Sassy, the sweet little calico tiger that wanted lap time. There is a very regal and friendly Siamese cat there now. Cody is very tall for a cat and has long long legs. He is a cream and sealpoint king of a cat who is so inquisitive and very loving. It´s rare for a purebred Siamese to be given up for adoption but there he is.
While I was there, a woman came in with a bunch of pre-teen and teenage kids. They had just brought in their cockatiel and parakeet to be given in adoption because mom had just gotten a full time job and she couldn´t care for the birds and their two dogs as well. I just nodded and listened to her story thinking all the while: you have big kids who are perfectly capable of cleaning bird cages, lady! It might teach them some responsibility. But who am I to judge? Again, I can only think of the abandoned animals and I know people have their problems too. I just think some people are too quick to acquire pets and then give them up at the slightest inconvenience. Sigh.
The nursery is bursting at the seams with puppies and kittens. It´s that time of year. And with so many people on vacation, adoptions are slower. I sat in a kennel with two golden retriever pups ...the epitome of gentle dogdom. They are one of my favorite breeds. They were apparently mixed with something else but all I could see was the golden in them. There was a run full of a large litter of Australian shepherd pups. These rough and tumble little guys were all over the place. One sad little female in the litter held back, though.
I went into the kennel to check her out and she seemed to have a fever. So I called the vet and it looks like the whole litter has to be quaratined in case she has something serious and catching.
I´ve never seen the shelter so full.

It´s hard and I DO want to take home all the unwanted animals but being here temporarily helps me keep my head on straight. The older cats live in freedom in a large cattery room and the dogs have very large runs. It´s quite a nice place. What breaks my heart are all the unwanted litters of puppies and kittens that are literally dumped in the doorstep. Most people are honest and pay the surrender fee but there are those who just drive by and dump. There must have been 100 kittens there yesterday. Neuter your animals, people!
GRRRRR....
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
You are right about the lady with the birds. Ridiculous!
I work in socializing animals at the shelter, too...the ones who are wary or untrusting of people or puppies and kittens who have not had much human contact. I walked around for a while yesterday with a kitten clinging to each shoulder. OUCH!
:D
Yes, I decided to channel my passion for animals into something really useful. When I return to Spain next month I plan on doing the same thing there with a rescue organization in Sevilla.
:)
I just could not stand it when they *put them down*.
You never get used to that. Luckily there are more and more no-kill shelters and rescues these days. Educating the public about the need to neuter animals is the real key, though. No animal leaves the CAHS without being neutered.
:)
I´m thinking about downloading trial versions of some of the software I mentioned but I have to find which are best and easiest for dummies like me.
:)
I've been working every evening this week .... and all of a sudden I feel very OLD. A couple nights would be ok ... but not Monday-Friday. The weather has been in the high 90's with heat index over 100 .... just misserable.
Give a kitty a special hug for me!!!
Those are such lousy hours to work. Right when you need/want to be home making dinner and just doing your thing.
HUGS, my friend!
Ah yes, puppie & kitty season ... we used to keep lists of people who WANTED them, then it would change to people with an overflow. Down here we have the added fun of people "adopting" for the summer, and then abandoning their pets when they return home. It's enough to make you crazy.
(sorry for the rant)
I´ve been here for almost 7 months, knew this was temporary, and have not gotten so much as a goldfish.
People drive me crazy.
(HUGS, Jan. I hope you´re feeling a bit better!)
The
Most of the animals that are abandoned are simply left outside to fend for themselves. Sometimes Animal Control is called, sometimes neighbors will bring the animals in.
People drive me crazy too.
Just me again, assuming that people are actually human and do the right thing. Well, the neighbors who take them in are.
:/
i look forward to hearing of your visits at the shelters when you are back in spain. though i know saying goodbye to the kids here is going to be very, very hard for you.
i will continue thinking of you, and i will hope with all my heart each and every one can find a wonderful home in which to live.
may their new parents mirror you in every way.
love,
angeli
I am hoping to become a contributor (not financial which would be impossible unfortunately, but of my time) to a new shelter in Sevilla. It is being set up by a group of women, one of whom I know. She adopted my puppies´ two sisters and is a marvelous person.
I, like you, thought I would always feel sad and only sad at the shelter. And there is a large measure of sadness and frustration. But there is also much hope and love. It is perhaps the only place I know of where everybody who works there is in love with their jobs. The joy and satisfation far outweigh the sorrows.
And when I leave next month I won´t say good-bye. Just ¨hasta luego¨.
We are hoping to return here next summer and I´ll be able to keep volunteering.
